The Lord’s church (or the church of Christ) is the church that has as its foundation and chief cornerstone, Christ Jesus. It was established in Jerusalem on the first Pentecost following the death of Jesus (Acts 2). This church is the kingdom that was prophesied by Daniel (Dan 2:44), and the deliverance prophesied by Joel (Joel 2:32). Since the establishment of the church, men have been actively causing divisions by departing from the pattern established by the apostles, who were given authority from Christ (Matt 16:19). One early departure was in the form of church government and hierarchy which became the Catholic Church. Another departure from the New Testament pattern was the introduction of mechanical instruments of music in the worship assembly. Throughout the years, departure after departure led to the many denominations that can be found in the world today. |

Ephesians 3:21What is the mission of the church of Christ? The dictionary defines mission in one sense as “the business with which a group is charged.” So what does the New Testament describe as the business with which Christians are charged in the world. We already know that the mission of Jesus Christ was to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10). Jesus came as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind. He was God’s lamb (John 1:29). He came as one slain from the foundation of the world (I Peter 1:19, 20). And he came as a willing sacrifice (John 10:17, 18; Hebrews 10:5-9). There was no other way (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). Jesus accomplished his mission and now is seated at the right hand of the father (I Peter 3:22). The mission of the church is an extension of what Jesus came to do. |
