The Lord’s church (or the church of Christ) is the church that has as its foundation and chief cornerstone, Christ Jesus. It was established in Jerusalem on the first Pentecost following the death of Jesus (Acts 2). This church is the kingdom that was prophesied by Daniel (Dan 2:44), and the deliverance prophesied by Joel (Joel 2:32). Since the establishment of the church, men have been actively causing divisions by departing from the pattern established by the apostles, who were given authority from Christ (Matt 16:19). One early departure was in the form of church government and hierarchy which became the Catholic Church. Another departure from the New Testament pattern was the introduction of mechanical instruments of music in the worship assembly. Throughout the years, departure after departure led to the many denominations that can be found in the world today.
1 Peter 1:25 teaches that the word of the Lord endures forever. This means that even in the midst of world wide religious confusion the truth can still be found when one looks for it in the right place. During the late 1700’s to the mid 1800’s, Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone were instrumental in leading many souls away from the darkness of denominationalism and back toward the one true church in what has been termed “the Restoration Movement”. This movement was an effort to return to the pattern of the 1st century church and leave the man-made creeds behind. The church that Christ established can still be found today. The church of Christ has the New Testament as her creed. Her doctrines are the same as the apostle’s doctrines. Her pattern is the same as it was almost 2000 years ago.
